THE IMPERIAL VALLEY In 2000 and 2001 I went to the desert to find myself. Or, more specifically, I wanted to try to find a way to make my images more (for lack of a better word) modern. The Imperial Valley is a desert to the south and east of Los Angeles. The first year I was there I shot black and white, the second year marked my switch to colour. I became more involved, proactive, in my portraiture and, in the looser shots began using space and an implied, unresolved narrative. None of this (except for the colour) was a radical change from what I had previously been doing, but I saw this as a plus. I was somehow staying within the borders of my aesthetic predilections but still shaking things around enough to make the results look different and, for me, more modern. It just felt right, like evolution.
